Supreme Court Rules Against Workers
Posted On: Jun 27, 2018
Today, the Supreme Court released their ruling on Janus v AFSCME, ruling in favor of Janus and a few wealthy anti-union, anti-worker organizations that speak for the minority of Americans. This decision favors the interests of the rich and powerful in a case funded by anti-union entities and special interests. They have attempted to take power away from YOU, the worker. This Supreme Court ruling is a direct attack on your workplace democracy, and is designed to weaken your union’s ability to represent you at the collective bargaining table.
This ruling is a serious setback for labor unions throughout America, however, we have faced much worse in the past and have banded together to emerge stronger than ever. We will not let this decision weaken us, or stop us from fighting for good, family-sustaining union jobs that communities thrive on. Our commitment to workers will not falter, as we fight to protect not only UFCW Local 1776KS members, but union members across the United States, as well as workers who seek to unionize for a brighter, more secure future for themselves and their families.
The anti-union Janus supporters know the benefits a strong union contract has for workers. Nonunion workers earn only 80% of the salary that union workers earn. Only 70% of nonunion workers have access to retirement and medical benefits, where 94% of union members have access to these benefits. Unions matter, unions make a difference, unions help ensure that workers receive equal pay, affordable healthcare, and livable wages. With strong unions, workers negotiate fair wages and benefits that support their families and better working conditions.
Our collective voice advocates for policies that benefit ALL working people. Some of these policies include advocating for increases to the minimum wage, affordable healthcare, non-discrimination in the workplace and your safety at work. This Janus ruling is designed to limit our ability, together as the members of UFCW Local 1776 KS, to preserve the wages and benefits we collectively bargain for, while trying to reverse or stall pro-worker policies in local, state and federal government that benefit middle class families.
But we must fight back. While Koch-brother funded organizations and anti-union corporations believe that the Janus decision will be the beginning of the end for union members and their right to representation, we know that UFCW Local 1776 KS will come out of this stronger than ever. Our successes working together will not be stopped. We must engage our co-workers, our friends, our families and speak to them about the “union difference”, and what your union contract means to you. We must defend the workplace democracy we have earned through organizing and collective bargaining. If we work together, the forces behind this anti-worker Janus decision will be stopped in their tracks.
Members are the union, and we will continue to rise up, fight for the rights of all working people and stand united. UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State has the power of over 30,000 hardworking members and we will not let these anti-worker extremists divide us, weaken us, or take our voices away.
