  • Local 1776 endorses Dwight Evans for U.S. Congress
    Updated On: May 02, 2016

(Plymouth Meeting, January 22, 2016) Wendell Young, IV, President of UFCW Local 1776 is pleased to announce that the UFCW 1776 Executive Board unanimously voted to endorse Rep. Dwight Evans for Congress in Congressional District 2.

“Dwight has been an advocate for the members of our Local during his time in Harrisburg,” stated Young. “I can’t imagine a better representative of the second Congressional District then Dwight Evans. He not only embodies the values of our union, but is the right candidate to go to bat in Washington D.C. for the communities in Philadelphia he works with day in and day out.”

In 1980, Dwight Evans was elected State Representative of the 203rd House District. Since Rep. Evans’ time in Harrisburg, he has built invaluable relationships and worked across party lines to get key bills and legislation passed that enabled Philadelphia to receive valuable funding for education, job training for Philadelphians and economic development initiatives.

Rep. Evans’ many accomplishments include Pennsylvania’s Fresh Food Financing Initiative that created jobs and availability to fresh food for areas of Philadelphia that were previously underserved. Rep. Evans also became the first ever African-American legislator to become Chairman of the Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee, a position he held for two decades.

“I would like to thank Wendell Young, the executive board and the thousands of UFCW 1776 members for their endorsement of my congressional campaign today,” said Evans. “Together, we have worked hard to bring jobs and fresh, healthy foods to the city of Philadelphia through the Fresh Food Initiative.  I greatly appreciate their support and together we will continue to fight block by block to revitalize urban America.”
